Public confidence in the New South Wales criminal justice system: 2012 update

This report assesses whether confidence in the New South Wales criminal justice system  has changed since 2007, whether changes in knowledge and/or punitiveness underpin any changes in confidence, and  whether confidence in police differs from confidence in the courts. Method: Repeat cross-sectional survey of the NSW public (n=2,002 in 2007; n=2,001 in 2012). The survey measured confidence, levels of knowledge and public demand for harsher sentencing in both years. Logistic regression models estimated changes in confidence after accounting for changes in sample composition. In 2012, participants were also asked about confidence in the police and courts separately. Results: Participants had high levels of confidence that the CJS respects the rights of the accused and treats them fairly but lower levels of confidence that the CJS brings people to justice, deals with cases promptly or meets the needs of victims. With the exception of confidence in respecting the rights of the accused, confidence was significantly higher in 2012 than in 2007. The 2012 respondents were also more knowledgeable about crime and justice and less punitive than the 2007 respondents. Respondents tended to have higher levels of confidence in the police than the courts. Conclusion: Levels of confidence in the CJS have improved since 2007. Factors such as increased knowledge and decreases in punitiveness may have contributed to these increases. However the changes in all three measures could reflect other factors such as the effect of the media and public policy. While confidence in police is generally high, the public lack confidence in the expediency of the courts and in outcomes for victims

Masculinity in lesbian discourse: the case of butch and femme

This chapter explores the ways in which a lesbian community of practice perform a ‘butch’ identity. It uses discourse analysis to consider an interaction between them, showing a shared sense of self to be produced which rejects traditional symbols of femininity. It is argued that performing a ‘butch’ identity is not the same as projecting a ‘masculine’ self; instead, butch identity is a way of challenging typical expectations about (heterosexual) women and femininity. ‘Butch’ identity is more complex than the mimicry of maleness, as it is often interpreted; instead, it allows lesbian women to perform an alternative, queer female identity

‘The fact they knew before I did upset me most’: Essentialism and normativity in lesbian and gay youths’ coming out stories

This article demonstrates, via discourse analysis of a group of young gay and lesbian people's coming out stories, the salience of essentialist ideologies on their identity construction. The study reveals underlying normative assumptions in the young people's narratives, including those associated with binary gender and innate sexual desire, which they employ in order to construct a culturally authentic sexual identity. Through close sociolinguistic analysis of interactions, it is shown how identity construction is directly influenced by broader ideologies. The analysis provides evidence of the continued prevalence of heteronormativity and homonormativity as key influences in young queer people's identity work

Discourses of transnormativity in vloggers’ identity construction

This article investigates the construction of two transgender vlogger personas, providing insight into the prevalence of normative discourses which may be drawn on when constructing transgender identities. Many transgender people around the world rely on the internet as a source of information and guidance, with online video diaries (“vlogs”), in which young people record and chart their experiences of transition, playing a particularly important role. In this article, discourse from two popular transgender vloggers is critically analysed. It is found that the vloggers index identities which are broadly in line with what Lal Zimman terms the archetypal “true transsexual”, an ideological model of what it means to be “authentically” transgender. This corresponds with heteronormative, essentialist expectations of binary gender. The vloggers are shown to authenticate their own experiences by stating what is “typical” and positioning themselves as “experts”. Ultimately, it is argued that the version of transgender identity and experience that they put forward reproduces prevalent discourses of normative gender and sexuality

Long Duration Exposure Facility (LDEF) structural verification test report

Structural load tests on the Long Duration Exposure Facility's (LDEF) primary structure were conducted. These tests had three purposes: (1) demonstrate structural adequacy of the assembled LDEF primary structure when subjected to anticipated flight loads; (2) verify analytical models and methods used in loads and stress analysis; and (3) perform tests to comply with the Space Transportation System (STS) requirements. Test loads were based on predicted limit loads which consider all flight events. Good agreement is shown between predicted and observed load, strain, and deflection data. Test data show that the LDEF structure was subjected to 1.2 times limit load to meet the STS requirements. The structural adequacy of the LDEF is demonstrated

TesisTrujilloEscuela de PosgradoAdministración del Talento HumanoLa Gestión Pública es un sintagma de límites imprecisos que comprende el conjunto de organizaciones públicas que realizan la función administrativa y de gestión del Estado y de otros entes públicos con personalidad jurídica, ya sean de ámbito regional o local. Se tuvo como objetivo determinar la relación de la Gestión Pública y el Desarrollo Sostenible con la participación ciudadana-2018. MÉTODOLOGIA: El diseño fue descriptivo correlacional. La muestra determinó a 162 personas, 93 líderes sociales y 69 trabajadores municipales, con una precisión de muestreo del 5%, nivel de confianza 95%. La técnica utilizada para el recojo de datos, fue una encuesta auto suministrada de Gestión Pública y de Desarrollo Sostenible, ambos en escala de Likert. El análisis de satos se realizó con el Software SPSS v21. RESULTADOS: El promedio de edad de la población líderes sociales fue 49,62 ± 7,94; de trabajadores municipales 45,42 ± 7,59. Se encontró al 79,6% de encuestados con mala percepción de gestión pública y deficiente desarrollo sostenible, con una correlación positiva significativa (Rho=0,415; p=.000); igualmente las dimensiones de: proyectos sostenibles, desarrollo sostenible (Rho=0,204; p=0.009), fortalecimiento de capacidades (Rho=0,222; p=0.005), organizaciones sociales (Rho=0,209; p=0.007), presupuesto participativo (Rho=0,225; p=0.004), marco normativo (Rho=0,225; p=0.004), plan director urbano (Rho=0,272; p=0.000) y objetivos institucionales (Rho=0,286; p=0.000) se correlacionaron significativamente a la gestión pública. CONCLUSIONES: La gestión pública tuvo correlación directa con intensidad leve al desarrollo sostenible; igualmente las dimensiones del desarrollo sostenible como proyectos sostenibles, fortalecimiento de capacidades, presupuesto participativo, marco normativo y objetivos institucionales correlacionaron a la gestión pública

FALC stromal cells define a unique immunological niche for the surveillance of serous cavities

The serous cavities contain specialised adipose tissues which house small clusters of immune cells known as fat-associated lymphoid clusters (FALCs). The continuous flow of fluid from the serous cavities through FALCs makes them unique niches for the clearance of fluid phase contaminants and initiation of locally protective immune responses during infection and inflammation. Development, and activation of FALCs both at homeostasis and following inflammation are co-ordinated by the close interaction of mesothelial and fibroblastic stromal cell populations with immune cells. In this review we discuss recent developments in FALC stromal cell biology and highlight key interactions that occur between FALC stroma and immune cells
